Recent research clearly establishes that anxiety originates in the mind, often triggered by a single thought. Have you ever wondered why certain individuals find a situation stressful while others remain unaffected? It’s a matter of perception, influenced by our unique experiences and interpretations. I have worked with many clients who have struggled with Anxiety in Northern Ireland, read on to find out more about how we work together to push through anxiety.
Anxiety is a learned behaviour; we aren’t born with it. Instead, we absorb it from our surroundings and pick it up through observation and experience. This might sound peculiar, but anxiety serves a purpose: to shield us from potentially challenging, uncomfortable, or even life-threatening situations. However, this protective mechanism is based on outdated information stored in our minds and failing to acknowledge our growth, newfound skills, and adult capabilities.
Viewing anxiety through this lens helps us recognize its primary function: protection. Yet, as circumstances evolve, our defence mechanisms must adapt accordingly. Fortunately, just as anxiety is learned, it can also be unlearned. This is where my Reset Technique come into play, offering a pathway to recalibrate our emotional responses and reassess the validity of our anxieties.
Consider a recent case I worked on, involving a man who regularly delivered presentations for his job. Despite coping well in the past, the onset of COVID-19 during lockdown brought about physical symptoms such as a persistent cough, fatigue, and memory lapses. Upon returning to work, he found himself struggling during presentations, consumed by the fear of coughing and forgetting crucial information. His dread intensified, leading to exhaustion from constant vigilance.
During our appointment, we unearthed underlying issues of self-doubt and harsh self-criticism. By addressing these, alongside his fear of coughing and memory lapses, he experienced a profound shift. He left feeling relieved and, after his next presentation, excitedly reported back that it had gone smoothly, restoring his confidence to pre-COVID levels.
The takeaway here is clear: don’t resign yourself to anxiety when there are effective methods for transformation available.
