Surviving a traumatic incident triggers a profound response within our minds. Similar scenarios are immediately highlighted, priming our fight or flight reflexes. The emotions we felt during the initial trauma resurface, often with the same intensity. For instance, if the initial experience induced panic, encountering a similar circumstance can evoke an identical panic response.
This phenomenon is especially evident in phobias. Suppose a traumatic incident involving, say, a dog occurred in childhood. In that case, the mere sight of a dog, even from a distance, can instantly plunge us into a state of panic reminiscent of the original event. This reaction persists because our mind associates the stimulus (the dog) with the past trauma, triggering an automatic response.
As children, our perceptions of threat differ from those as adults. A seemingly innocuous event, such as a three-year-old being knocked over by a large dog, can leave a lasting imprint on our psyche. While this experience might have been terrifying at three, as adults, encountering a similar situation will not pose the same level of threat. However, our minds often fail to update this information, leading us to react as if the danger persists, this is where we see the true impact of trauma.
